God, righteousness,
life, and the kingdom of God are light in the Old ad New Testaments. Satan,
evil, death, hell, and the world of mankind in rebellion against God are
darkness.
Adam and Eve disobeying God and obeying Satan was the
beginning of the world of darkness (Genesis 3:1-6). “World” is used three ways
in the Bible: (1) created world, (2) world of humanity, and (3) world of those in
rebellion against God. So, when you see the word “world” in the Bible, identify
which one is being spoken about by the way it is used in the passage of
Scripture you are reading.
After the flood, it wasn’t
long before a new world of unbelief began, and it is still growing and will continue to grow until
the final judgment. “Whereby the world that then was,
being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are
kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of
ungodly men” (2 Peter 3:6-7).
There have been several
times since the flood that it looked as though the darkness was going to be
successful in putting out the light. However, it was only temporary. There have always been those in the light who
stood firm in obedience to God’s word, and grace was given to them to lead
others to victory over darkness.
Jesus conquered darkness through
his death on the cross and his resurrection. “Having
disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them,
triumphing over them in it (Colossians 2:15). Although Jesus conquered
darkness through the cross, darkness never gives up. The battle will continue
until the new heaven and new earth when there will be no more darkness
(Revelation 20:1-6).
Satan and all his followers
from Adam and Eve to the great white throne judgment (Revelation 20:11) will
get there wish to be in darkness and will be in outer darkness forever and ever
(Matthew 8:12, 22:13, 25:30).
God and His Son, Jesus
Christ, will be the Light of the new heaven and new earth, and those who have
been walking in the light of Christ will continue do so forever and ever
(Revelation 20:5).
Peter in his first letter writes about the transformation from darkness to light. “But you are the chosen race, the King's priests, the holy nation, God's own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9 GNT).
